Who Can Walk In the Door

This is not a campus fair for current undergrads. The Ohio State Alumni Association's event listing says it is open to alumni of Ohio State, Otterbein and Ohio Dominican, among other schools, and that family, friends and December graduates are welcome too.

The registration page widens the net further. It lists partner schools including Capital, Case Western Reserve, Cedarville, Miami, Kent State, Ohio University, Cincinnati, Xavier and Youngstown State, and says graduates of schools not on the list can attend if they hold at least a four-year degree. Doctoral candidates and graduate students from the participating schools are included as well.

Registered job seekers can also get a free professional headshot, which is worth the trip alone if your LinkedIn photo was taken at a cousin's wedding.

đź’Ľ Who's Recruiting

The employer roster on the registration page cuts across nearly every sector central Ohio hires in. Names posted there include The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, L3Harris, Vertiv, Boehringer Ingelheim, Franklin County Children Services, Columbus State Community College, South-Western City School District, Whitehall City Schools, National Church Residences, Limbach, Whiting-Turner and the Ohio Department of Behavioral Health. Federal recruiters are on the list too, including the Central Intelligence Agency.

Rosters move right up to the day of a fair, and the organizer's own materials give different employer counts, so treat any single name as likely rather than guaranteed. If one employer is the reason you are going, email the organizer before you make the drive.

Start the morning early if you can. The 10:00 a.m. employer panel in the Student Alumni Council Room is a Q&A with hiring reps, and it is a low-pressure way to hear what recruiters want before the ballroom fills up.

đź“‹ How to Show Up Ready

  • Register online first. Registration is what unlocks the headshot.
  • Bring printed rĂ©sumĂ©s, tailored to two or three target employers from the roster.
  • Know your pitch. Thirty seconds on your degree, your experience and the role you want.
  • Plan your parking. The Ohio Union lists the Ohio Union South Garage at High Street and College Road as its visitor garage. Rates run through CampusParc.
